1. Wash the figs thoroughly and cut a cross in their bases. Sit in a pot and carefully pour in the 1.5l water. Bring to a boil, cover and cook for 5 minutes.
2. Add the spices and continue cooking gently, covered, for about 3 hours, or until the liquid has reduced to a thick sauce. Remove the figs and arrange on a plate. Sweeten the sauce with honey.
3. Strain through a fine-meshed sieve, pour back into a pan, allow to warm through and pour over the figs. Allow the figs to cool and serve with cheese.
